The University of Liège offers its courses mainly in French. It is therefore necessary that exchange students have sufficient command of this language (both written and oral) in order to understand the courses and effectively participate in seminars and practical exercises.

Consequently, we ask students who take courses in French to attach to their application form a document attesting to their level of proficiency in French.

  • The minimum level required is level B1 (B2 for HEC Liège) according to the common European frame of reference.
  • For courses taught in English, a level B1 certificate is required (B2 for HEC).

In addition to this language attestation, upon their arrival, non-French speaking students who take courses in French must take a mandatory French test in order to check their language level. The results of this test are communicated to departmental coordinators within the faculties of ULiège.

If students only take courses in English, the French certificate is not required, but a document attesting the student's level of English is mandatory (level B1, or B2 for HEC).

In case of a bilingual course, a certificate of French and English is mandatory (both B1, or B2 for HEC Liège).

Erasmus Mundus Masters (EMMC) and Erasmus Mundus Doctorate (EMJD) courses are offered in English.

For the language of the courses, you can consult the course programme. The note "English" after the course title means that the course is given in English; no note after the course title means that the course is given in French (even if the name of the course is translated in English in the list).
