Health care insurance / Incoming exchange student
In Belgium, it is mandatory to have an individual health care insurance.
This information concerns students in mobility. For students coming from abroad and registered or in the process of regular registration at the University, consult these pages.
If they are not registered with a health care insurance in their home countries and valid in Belgium, students have to subscribe to the health insurance of their choice in Belgium. In that case, majority of the medical costs in Belgium will be reimbursed (vist to the doctor, medication etc.).
- If you are from an EEA country (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), your national system covers you in Belgium. Before leaving your country, you must acquire a European insurance card. This card will cover you in case of sickness abroad. the validity varies from one country to another and is of maximum two years.
However, if you need to see a doctor in Belgium, we recommand you subscribe to a Belgian health insurance so as to get about 75% of the medical costs paid back to you. The balance could be paid by your health insurance in your home country.
- If you are from a country outside of the EEA, you must ensure your coverage either through an insurance from your home country or by taking out an insurance policy in Belgium.
Moreover, all students enrolled in ULiège benefit from civil liability and bodily injury insurance for any accident tied to their academic activities, be it in Belgium or abroad.
Medical consultations
All students enrolled at ULiège may benefit from consultations at the University Hospital (Sart Tilman University Hospital) and at Brull Polyclinics (City Center). As long as you are registered with a mutual insurance company (mutuelle), these consultations are fully reimbursed. It is necessary to communicate the identification number that appears on your student card when registering at the consultation.
